Investigating the engine RPM drop

Monday afternoon after work seemed as good a time as any to do the start of the investigation. I’d already contacted the marina yard manager, and the mechanic is on holiday this week, so I may as well do some fault finding and provide details so the yard can work faster.

The diagnostic list was

  • tighten various jubilee clips on the fuel path in case one wasn’t quite tight enough
  • run the engine at 2500 RPM with no load for 10 minutes to see what happens
  • go out into the bay and run the engine at 2500 RPM and 3600 RPM for up to 30 minutes

The short form is there were some slightly loose clips, but tightening them did not resolve the issue.

I am, however, seeing air in the filter bowl of the primary and secondary filters. I don’t think I should see air here, but I’ve never actually watched the bowl before, so I don’t know if it’s normal.
