Browsing Posts in Spam

Due to a mis-communication, our ISP has changed our MX record in a way that direct e-mail to our DSL line.  We actually wanted this to happen, but not today!  So we’ve spent the past few hours getting Exchange happy, setting up port forwards, multi-NAT and more.

Changed my password, broke the LDAP authentication for our internal issue tracker, wiki and other sundries on the same Apache server.  Worked that one out eventually.  Must get around to creating a special account for that server to authenticate with.

Of course, this force migration means we’ve got spam protection in place again, so I’ve been able to remove my SA rules from KMail.  Yay!  KMail has a horrible blocking issue where the mail fetch and fork ‘thread’ blocks the entire UI.  Hopefully that issue goes away in the release of KMail for KDE 4.

I decided to play with Exchange via the web interface, and created a calendar event for tomorrow – I’m home in the afternoon to receive my new kitchen, and put in a calendar event to show this.  When Kontact next did a POP3 run, it picked up the invitation to the event (had to invite myself), and said, essentially ‘Accept this event’, ‘Accept it conditionally’ and ‘Don’t accept’.  Surprised, I clicked Accept, and when I checked Korganizer (embedded in Kontact as a kpart), there was my event!

Could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw that.  I know the Kontact/KDE PIM folks have done some good work, but I wasn’t expecting that kind of support :)

$dayjob, as written previously, is a managed anti-spam, anti-virus service.  One of our first customers was our ISP, so we’ve always been protected by our software – good way to tell if it’s working!

Things have changed, we’re moving away from that ISP, and they’re changing to an in-house solution tailored for their needs.  Our MX records now point straight to the mail store server, so all the wonderful spammers in the world can now e-mail us, and our accounts have no protection.

I didn’t realise how much spam I get at my work account – I’ve never run a report on my own mail before, and I’m thinking I should, because it’s absolutely nuts how much I’m getting.  I’ll be changing to a fetchmail + SA pickup for now, until we get our SDSL line and pull our mail in-house.
