		<description>Courtesy of the denizens of the Networking forum on Ars Technica, I have the answer.

The coupled SC connectors on the orange cabling were coupled backwards, so the TX ports were talking to each other, instead of TX to RX.

Also turns out that 9 micron core SMF will work with an MMF GBIC, but it&#039;s liable to damage things, and really won&#039;t work that well.
