Invasion of the Netherlands (and my triumphant return)

Filed under: Photography, Reviews, Travel — cricalix @ 19:58

Thursday morning I wandered across to the eastern side of Amsterdam, using my handy 48-hour pass for access to all trams (and busses), and meandered back through the streets, looking for various churches etc that were marked on the map. One that was listed as a Chinese temple had unfortunately been converted into a restaurant - pity that.

Without even trying, I managed to wander in to the infamous Red Light district of Amsterdam - though thankfully it was daylight, not nighttime. Even walked past a joint called Bananas, which apparently converts men to vegetarians for the night (or bananarians?). Peculiar place this Amsterdam.

While admiring Oude Kerk (Old Church - the Netherlanders are very pragmatic in their naming of places), a chap walked up to me, and offered me his wallet (with money in it) as a deposit for him to take my photo with my camera. Somehow, the concept of handing over a multi-hundred quid camera to a chap offering me a wallet with about 20 € in it didn’t strike me as a good proposition, so I politely declined.

My feet kept on moving, and I ended up back in Dam square, and decided to play with the 75-300mm lens to see how far it could reach. I’ve mentioned it before - the KM 5D has image stabilisation built in to the body, and it’s a beautiful thing. With a braced body, anti-shake engaged and the 75-300 out to max, I was picking up people on the other side of the square, nice and crisp.

  2. Hmm.. maybe one or two, it’s all the same in the end during the day. There should be two in the gallery (which is out of disk space, so some pictures are missing) at least.
