The other day, the 20th to be precise, I woke up early in the morning and noticed my server wasn’t playing classical music any more. The hard drive light was on solid, and there was no response from the keyboard or mouse. I promptly hit the power switch, figuring it’d just boot up later in the morning when I got up.
Who tell me say dat!?
Suffice to say, that morning when I attempted to power my server back up, it didn’t boot. At all. No beeps, no POST, no video, no nuttin’. In the ensuing days, I attempted to replace the power supply (as it seemed like that was the culprit – it would turn on for about half a second) to no avail, changed motherboards (I have a spare) to no avail and generally pondered the situation. I finally gave in last Friday and ordered a PowerEdge 1420 with a nice shiny Xeon processor from Dell for £400 shipped.
That same server arrived today at noon, and Kubuntu Breezy was laid down in 15 minutes flat. Try doing that with a CD install of Windows XP some day :) I’ve since re-installed the OS, as I decided to do the layout another way. A bit of copying to back up the data (thank $deity that my drives weren’t damaged) and I’m about 1/4 the way to a restored server.
I’ve got the chance to replace the mail server (currently courier) if I want to, while my laptop handles mail using Dovecot for me. I doubt I’ll use Dovecot though, it’s still a bit too unstable for me. Cyrus is tempting, if only for Sieve capability.
