Back on to the A54, and onwards to Buxton! The road twists and turns, bumps and drops as it passes the River Dane, and the valley to the right of the road is quite impressive. A quick stop to get some photos of a milestone marker (dated 1896 and still in good condition) and an abandoned (I think) farmhouse, and then another one to talk to some cows and try for photos of an old chimney stack – I think it was for a slate mine or similar – the opposite side of the valley showed evidence of being mined for something. I also took time to offload the 1 GB CF card to my laptop – I had put over 600 MB of photos on to it already, and I hadn’t even reached the half-way point of my journey

I continued on to Buxton, climbing higher and higher into the District, and then turned towards Harpur Hill, aiming for the B5053 and Froghall. Joining the 5053, I promptly turned off again to run up the road to Dalehead. There were quite a few ramblers out, apparently enjoying the sunshine. Once up on the top, I pulled over next to a public pathway marker, and went for a ramble of my own (albeit a short one) across some fields on the top of the bluff. The view northwards was quite pleasant, with some wonderful contrails marking the sky.
