Upgrading the house

For the past few weekends, I’ve been working on the house, with the help of my parents. The first room to go under the putty knife is the bathroom - we’ve ripped out the old, tired wooden panelling, patched multiple holes in the wall, given the radiator a nice coat of gloss white paint and redone the walls in a nice pale blue. Taking the radiator out led to a leak - though luckily it was at the T-valve, not in the welds of the copper pipe! Ripped up a few floorboards to track that one down, so those got replaced.

Having discovered that we can replace the tongue-and-groove flooring fairly easily, we’ve replaced several other dodgy boards, and created an access hatch to one of the main wiring points. Something like 4 heating pipes and 8 different wires travel through the hatch area, so it made sense. This weekend also involved the construction of an Ikea Kullen wardrobe. We only made one mistake, right at the beginning, and it took 2 hours to put it all together. With the wardrobe done, all of my clothing is now out of the travel bags (where they’ve been for 6 months+) and into the various shelves and drawers. I can see parts of my bedroom floor again, and the wardrobe takes up an alcove that would have been hard to fill otherwise.

Avoiding the hoopla of an iPod

As mentioned previously, having played with an iPod, I’m quite impressed with where the technology is. However, I rarely jump into a new tech gadget without doing -some- research first, and man have I been doing research on portable media players. One of the better sites I’ve found (commercial wise) is Advanced MP3 Players. They have a fairly wide range of flash and disk based players, and have the base specs on each one. The more I consider my needs (wants?), I think it would be beneficial to have a player that doesn’t need the music and graphics to be added with a dedicated app like iTunes - this is important for me because I rarely boot Windows XP on the laptop.

Oh well, I get to ponder some more, as I need to put my money towards things like a new boiler for the house.

iPods. Now I understand the hoopla.

I’ve often wondered what the hoopla over the Apple iPod was about.

Today I met an iPod. Stark, simple, tactile, functional. I’m not so sure on the menu interface yet, but beyond that it’s fairly brilliant. Simple smooth touches to the click-dial and things happen. It’s a tad sensitive for my massive fingers, but that’s probably adjustable somewhere. If it isn’t, shame on Apple.

I’ve looked at what Apple have to offer, and there’s the new version that blends the standard iPod and the iPod photo. That is very tempting, even at 209 quid, as I do take a fair number of photos, and having a portable storage device that can also hold my 26 GB music library? Bonus! So, time for a long think, as I’m trying to put money towards the house fund right now. Would be neat to have it at RIAT 2005.
